Indigo Sea

Indigo Sea

A Poem by Ani Ashford

Floating, I recline upon the sea,
resigned upon the sea;
floating, floating
on the heart beat.

My heart is soft with the waves
which wash, lapping, lapping
at my senses of the inner eye
breaking sun across
a kaleidoscope sky.

Shades of blue, dark and surreal,
are indigo, cobalt, cerulian sea.

How long can you
hold your breath under
water? Water: Shades of blue,
Dark and surreal; indigo cobalt,
Cerulian sea.

Breath. It might be a while
where the dolphins sing,
swimming round in rings.

Floating, I recline upon the sea,
resigned upon the sea;
floating, floating
on a heart beat.

My heart is soft with the waves
which wash, lapping, lapping
at my senses of the inner eye
breaking sun across
a kaleidoscope sky.    1st draft 09/29/2008

Really good poem; the best I've read here so far. Very vivid, and it just flows when you read it in your head. Quality work. The fifth verse or stanza or whatever they're called, the one that starts with "Breath", I was wondering if it was meant to be breath or breathe. Either one would make sense in its own way; it's just that I read it in my head as "breathe" then corrected myself. The entire stanza or verse or whatever stands out a little bit. I don't know if that's intentional or if in the next draft you want to add a phrase or something to make it blend better. I guess the rest of the poem has a brilliant rhythm to it that matches the lapping of waves, and that verse doesn't quite fit. You know what I mean?

Being an old ex-Navy man, I'm always a sucker for poems about the sea. Many are the memories your words bring back to me.

Having served in the US Navy for twenty years, I learned to love the sea with all its moods, images and sounds. One day serene and calm, the next day angry and turbulent, but always awe-inspiring. Your wonderful poem speaks to me, Anita.

I am enchanted with the hues you have picked up from the sea. The poetry has an undulating rhythm that brings the tanginess of the shore into my mind.
Great one.

Good poem it reminds me of a most wonderful time on the Santa Monica beach that later would inspire a dark murder story.

This is so pretty.

I love the ocean. Don't get to go much anymore, used to go quite a bit when my son's were small. This reminds me of a more carefree time...

Thank you for sharing
