The ProgramA Story by Abishai100A touted college-athletics program in a hyped media-season symbolizes a new era American dictionary.
A pre-Coronavirus college-sports fan-account of an iconic comeback football game, inspired by the diamond film The Program (James Caan). Hope you like it (Go Irish!),
DISCLAIMER: I have no official ties to the dramatized game/team romanticized in this generic American college-athletics patriotism-spirit vignette and present this short as simply a television dial. ---- ==== The Notre Dame Fightin' Irish college-football (NCAAF) team in the United States represents a highly-respected American Catholic university and had become a storied team by the 2006 season, when expectations were high because of a gifted quarterback named Quinn, the Mighty Quinn, who made the campus very exciting for NBC-TV that season. Notre Dame had always touted its incredible student fanbase, but in 2006, the eyes were on the prize, as the new coaching staff and talented team were suddenly creating the right tones for excellent magazine ads, NBC-broadcasting, and campus life. The Notre Dame Fightin' Irish college-football (NCAAF) team therefore represented the very best in the idea of The Program. The term 'The Program' refers to an American sociocultural investment in the excellence of marketing extra-curricular activity (sports) in a United States that celebrates the patriotic spirit of engendering sportsmanship and school-pride in the modern era of TV! The Program, the very best, that is Notre Dame (USA), was touted to go far in 2006, after a turnaround of the school football program thanks to coaching and athletes and fans of course. COACH: What sets The Program apart is its dual attention to both football and campus-academics and Catholic pride/spirit. The local "Notre Dame High-School" offered a special football team as well with its own local townfolk fans and cheerleaders, preparing hopefully to send hopeful students/stars to the University of Notre Dame, The Program! COACH: We're fortunate to have such fortunes in America, since other parts of the world like Northern Ireland struggle! STUDENT/ATHLETE: We're expected to appreciate the spirit of The Program and an excellent Catholic-university education. That year, since The Program was touted and hyped in media, there was a special campus culture focus on various theater programs and commerce initiatives designed to market/hype the world-culture focus of the democratic and pluralism 'feel' of Notre Dame, and an East-West fashion show featured representative new millennium showcasing of cultural identity and commerce. DESIGNER: We capture the 'Luck of the Irish' in America as contrasted with the troubled areas of Northern Ireland. STUDENT: You really get a feel of the 'Irish-Catholic' sociocultural investment in pluralism-education at this university. In fact, that year not only was The Program touted, but so was the academic programs in law and literature, and meanwhile there were serious globalism developments regarding commerce and culture-exchange through Wall Street, which Notre Dame students were expected to learn and contribute! The year prior, Notre Dame was defeated in a saga-game to rival Michigan State, but this year, the rematch would feature the same Mighty Quinn Fightin' Irish QB who had revenge on his mind, despite the gritty Spartan-rivals who showed up on the Notre Dame field cheering...and fighting. TEACHER: We teach our students not to take American fortunes for granted, for the 'Luck of the Irish' isn't shared in Belfast! Well, this touted revenge-game in this touted NCAAF game in The Program in 2006 saw the Mighty Quinn struggle early, as the rival Spartans jumped out to a huge 17-0 lead in the 1st quarter thanks to two great passes and a field-goal, while the Irish were held scoreless in front of an angry Notre Dame crowd and TV-fans on a Saturday night. The Spartans showed the same fighting spirit they did when they defeated the Irish in the saga-game in 2005, for which the Mighty Quinn sought real revenge. However, the Spartans continued to play well, despite the Irish suddenly coming to life in the 2nd quarter with two TD passes from the Mighty Quinn to star-catchers, but the Spartans scored 2 TDs too. FAN: The Mighty Quinn can prove the Fightin' Irish are worth the 2006 Program hype, because we fans need this Irish diary. Notre Dame then scored 7 points and the Spartans scored 6 in the 3rd quarter, with the Mighty Quinn only slightly relieved. The respected Irish coach of The Program had to tell his players, "We have to think big-scores in the final quarter if we have a chance to convert this survival-momentum into meaningful dance for the 'luck of the Irish'." That's just what happened, thanks to more star-catchers doing their part while holding the Spartans scoreless in that awesome 4th quarter. After 9/11, the world and especially Americans of all backgrounds needed some real TV-spirit, and this breath-taking late comeback by the Mighty Quinn and the Fightin' Irish on a Saturday night special proved to be something all Irish fans in the United States considered a 'cool toast' to Western heroism. FAN: It was a comeback for the ages, and even if The Program doesn't go all the way, this Spartan-revenge will be honored! The fan who made this comment in the media was the girlfriend of one of the Irish, and her father happened to be an executive member of the inter-religious peace-advocacy group in troubled Northern Ireland, Friends of Sinn Fein. He commented, "If my daughter is respected as a student as well as a fan and her Irish-star boyfriend proves to be a real gentleman and Notre Dame star, I'll approve of this 'media' dazzle." COACH: The miracle of this Catholic Program is its investment in student-imagination and American distances in this new era. ==== "Money is everything" (Ecclesiastes) © 2021 Abishai100 |
