jack

jack

A Poem by Akinli Wilde

Jack
Always laughing, smile so bright.
I never seemed to lose the high
of being the one to catch his eye.
Eyes of electric blue, so fierce and full of life.
School days filled with smiles and playful
antagonizing.
Fifth grade was the year it started, but also
when it ended.
Same class, same teacher, same notice.
Not only fun, but kind, a light in a world of dark.
But no, it had to end.
Twas too nervous to ask for his number,
too scared to say goodbye.
He left that summer three years ago,
moved to a different place, never coming back.
I still think about those days
Filled with laughter and a game of poking.
A whispered "I like you" in a hallway.
A broad, yet shy smile back.
"Did I hear you right" response.
What goes up, must come down.
He moved, and I was left.
But I think he took a part of me with him.
Here I am today, an unfinished person
with a chip in her heart.
