For Katie

For Katie

A Poem by All faded blue

It was simple,
just a conversation between friends,
which is what we have become.

You, my daughter in law,
beloved of my son,
mother of my first grandchild.

We are bound together now,
by life experiences and the love
of one man,  and one man child.

My breath, for a moment,
caught in my throat,
at questions asked.

And then, why not?... I thought,
we share so much else,
why not this?

The question asked,
brought so much to mind,
and at 2 am, and an empty wine glass or two,

Not so strange after all,
and I gave you a glimpse into me,
my childhood, and the ending of it

as I recall.  And I listened,
as you stumble over words,
the places I have already traveled so many times.

You as well, bare your soul,
and I see a part of you,
not known before.

So tomorrow, in the cold, stark light of day,
without the dark, and the warmth of shared child
between us,

I will give to you,
space, to be you, to be loved
validated,

and honored.  Wife of son,
mother of grandchild,

friend and daughter,
you become,
and are.

I love this. It's so beautiful as I'm sure is the friendship you have with previous Katie.

I miss you!

oh this is lovely. How have you been? I've been doing this genealogy project for about eight months now and have not been at the Cafe....I'm trying to get back into the swing of things....
