lonely souls

lonely souls

A Poem by Allen Smuckler

We don’t know the lonely souls

we don’t know them at all

they sit behind cascading falls

detached behind their walls

they walk amongst us every day

beneath the shimmering stars

they sit beside us on a plane

to view our senseless pain

they chit and chat ‘bout nothing much

order the beverage of the day

listen to the tales that they hear

and hide inside their fears

still we ask them how they feel

how Johnny’s doing in school

as if we care about the ‘A’

he nailed in History

we don’t know what lonely is

until it slaps our face

and only then do we pretend

that we can comprehend

we settle for the girl next door

as sad and torn she is

and dry the glistening tears

to reminisce the years

the lonely souls who cry inside

formed from shapeless smiles

lost the will so long ago

before their hearts could follow ...

Loneliness is both a curse and common. Neither is it just for senior citizens losing life long partners. The young can be just as lonely. Cities can be very lonely places. We should all look out for our neighbour. A friendly face abd word can make a huge difference.

This is a really great and powerful write. I disagree with you, though. I DO know the lonely souls...I have spent most of my life as one of them. I have known deeper sadness and pain than most can even imagine, and I'm probably not the only one.

That's very kind, and you're welcome.
I really liked the message. Loneliness will find us all one day. We should always share our humanity with others.
So many people these days are lost and empty. In our busy lives we need to see our neighbor.

Your haunting poem harkens to all the people who harbor loneliness while being convinced that everyone else must be having a great time with loads of camaraderie. Your writing is gently powerful (((HUGS)))

I read this as one sitting on a park bench just people watching. Some conversations you hear. Others you interpret as to what you think their mouths are wording. Their feeelings and nuances pronounced. Like a story each time you sit, with chapters for each individual or pair. It just takes me back to that time I sat on a bench to watch the world go by. I like this one as well. :)

very empathetic words...sometimes conversations exist for politeness instead of genuine interest

Being s lonely soul right now, I identify with this piece mah fren'. I work in a field where I am always in plain view of the customer, and have to smile and converse like nothing is wrong. It is difficult to direct people to their needs with a smile while inside I am dying. Thank you for this.

It's always better to stay alone, and she'd tears behind the walls, when people are hardly interested to listen, or they are to busy in their own happy sweet world. The one who suffers, knows how bad and haunting it feels.

Pretending to be happy in front of people, when you're actually sad, is painful! People may not know and sense, but the heat and souls bleeds every single minute., But then there goes the truth..."Nobody can feel how you feel, until they've been in tgatvsme mess before.we are the ones, who can heal us the best, nobody else sigh*

Thankyou for sharing your amazingly thoughtful poem 😊
