Beckoned by Aphrodite

Beckoned by Aphrodite

A Poem by Allyson Wolfe

Beckoned by Aphrodite,
seduced by her wicked call;
I follow the scent of sweet, sweet roses.
Happiness gathers around me like Apollo's rays.
I was called to this wave
in a drug like stupor,
not knowing whether I would fall or rise.
Beckoned by Love,
I follow the scent of sweet, sweet roses,
I fall into the wave.
Ecstasy envelopes me in it's frothy folds.
I was called to this sea
by your beauty and your words,
not knowing whether I would live or die.
Beckoned by Aphrodite,
I swim in the proverbial sea,
swimming in love,
fearful of the ever-present and deadly
wave.
I do not know if I will fall.
I do not know if I will rise.

You use very nice imagery here. I like the scene of the rising and the falling of the waves, almost like a metaphor for love and lust itself. Your repeat of the first stanza in a slightly altered form is a good touch. It's also interesting to note your use of waves and the sea, as one of the versions of Aphrodite's creation myth is that she was born of sea foam when Cronus castrated Uranus. A mere coincidence?

From this and the titles of several of your other poems, I take it you enjoy Greek mythology.

Nice job with your poem.

Poor Cockold Hasphestus! Ares didn't have to abduct, trick or rape her. She knew what she wanted. THe story of adonis is another Greek tale I can spin off the top of my head.

This is a beautiful poem. It has a lyrical element like a love song. Excellent work. The whole "descent" into love not knowing how it ends is presented well.
