Reflective Glass

Reflective Glass

A Poem by Amazonia_08
"

A poem about insecurity.

"

The sight before me reflects a lifetime,

It reflects deep within,

And a pool of feelings embed themselves,

Stick themselves quite unnoticed inside my soul,

Where the jagged scars shine ghostly white in the still water,

The invisible lines sewn into my insides,

Without a seamstress to correctly insert the needle and thread,

Leaves an uneven childhood,

And an unclear path of quickly obtained maturity in its wake,

Nights visiting the only reflecting glass I can afford,

That of a large cool piece of a looking glass,

Mere heavy steps from where I hide my inner self,

When I compare myself to the average magazine cover, their

Porcelain even faces,

High cheekbones,

Desired bodies,

But that’s what my reflecting glass shouts out at me,

Every time I brush my teeth,

Pass a newly waxed car,

And sit cross-legged on my couch eating pizza,

While watching magazine pictures come to life on the tiny soft grey bordered object,

That’s called the television,

People say,

You’re beautiful just the way you are,

But they forget to tell us that the world is full of Photoshop,

And airbrushed models,

Who pose for a reflective tool,

That makes millions of girls look in their reflective glass and ask,

Am I truly beautiful?

Or am I not good enough?

I am speechless. The way you put this together was very surreal. I love poems that send out a great message and this one has it. Many, many girls and women out there can relate to this.

This is my favorite part in the poem. Yes, nowadays, it is all about artificial beauty. At times, girls feel like they need to be artificial to be beautiful. Whatever happened to the natural world?

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Different people have different ideas of beauty.

Great job, Amazonia.

beautiful lines: "When I compare myself to the average magazine cover, their

More people should view this. Break that reflective glass, and start seeing beauty in themselves. Love it.

An unattainable look has been pedaled as real life. Even the people in the pictures don't look like that and yet...that seems to be the standard. This is a timely poem and one that has serious social merit. So much doubt that creates so much damage all in the name of this false brand of beauty.
