What was he,essentially?

I can't remember the first time I heard the name 'Aleister Crowley' but I will certainly remember thinking how odd a name it was. 

A quick search on Google brings up keywords like "The Wickedest Man in the World" "The Beast 666" and devil worshipper among other things. Those words are enough for any person to flee and never look back into the topic but those with a bit stronger resolve remain.
