Chambery

Chambery

A Chapter by Ana Papaya
"

When you can't travel, let your mind do it for you.

"
.~

I caught a glimpse of heaven once
it was early morning

a drive along avenue de Chambéry
sunrise pushing through a mist
as the Alps longed to hold on to night

and my nose tickled
by the wafting aroma of fresh bread
seeping, from the boulangerie out onto the street

it will soon fill with people
   shattering my peaceful reprieve
but not before I've caught a glimpse

      of the sun
rising with my dreams
over the rainy streets
of reality

~.

Instant wanderlust.
Great, thx. Jerk...
We get some pretty sunrises, but the only wafting aromas over here come from dumpsters.
Jealous.
Granted, it has been peaceful lately...
And the streets do tend to mirror the sunrise after it rains...
It's breathtaking, but I'd still trade any day.

This is so light & refreshing in today's world of grumbling about lockdowns. Love your suggestion . . . yes, we all need to curb our habit of writing covid or politics into everything. We need unpolluted flights of fancy like this (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Thanks so much Kym. :)
This is wonderful Ana. Spectacular imagery and you transported me to Switzerland where I thought I had once found heaven too, in the melting glaciers and spring meadows on the sunniest of days. Chocolate box scenery.

Yes can’t wait!!!
The poet indicates that the scenes described in the poem took place in the imagination. If so, her imagination served her well. The sights come through as clearly as HD TV. We can smell the fresh bread. At the end, we are told how a view of the sunrise will cap off a perfect journey before returning to the "rainy streets of reality." Perhaps, with practice, we can come to terms with those rainy streets some day

Thank you kindly, John. :)
I always appreciate your visits.
The aroma of Fresh baked bread and the
early morning mist in Chambery would be
a perfect beginning to a romantic day.

Mmm. Yes I think so. :)
Thank you Pat!
If you go high enough the air doesn't smell like anything. Well, if "cold" was an odor I guess it'd smell like that.

Maybe cold is the absence of other smells then?
"When you can't travel, let your mind do it for you."

Thanks, I'll remember this :)

I relate with how a faint smell, a lingering memory of bliss refreshes us along our whole lives. These memories, feelings are suppressed usually and are specifically triggered by smell. I wonder if the rarity of these events is what keeps that nostalgia so immense.

Thanks for sharing. The footnote about chambery was quite helpful :p

The pleasure is mine :)
And this is something we have been doing all year; travelling in our minds because we can't do the real thing. Chambery sounds like a wonderful place for a visit. I love mountain regions. They are so tranquil and perfect for inner reflection. You painted us a picture here, Ana. Now just wait for this virus to shoo.
