A Couple

A Couple

A Poem by Andrew Rayne
"

For a Couple, we were pretty good together.

"
Moonlight spilled through the window as it searched for the stars,
the ones hiding behind the softness of your eyelids as they soothed
tired eyes to sleep.
Breaths long and deep as dreams cast light over your heart
and took away the weight of your shoulders,
even if only for a couple of hours.
If only for a couple of hours I would watch the most beautiful face in the world
fill my room with every light the night had to offer.
For that small amount of time I wondered at how easy it was for you to sleep now.

For a couple of days I was learning to love this woman who lay next to me.
For a couple of moments at a time I would stare into your eyes
and burn out the imperfection that you said they had.
Tear the word out of our language so you would never have to think
of yourself as anything less than beautiful.
Anything less than everything I could have asked for;
You were perfect.

In your own right, and especially in those couple of hours
you were absolutely perfect for me.

For a couple of weeks we were inseparable,
in love,
and crazy for the way our fingertips sent sensations we had all but forgotten
through our skin.
For a couple of weeks I would see myself with you on altar
and smile to myself.
Wondering that if it had to rain on that day,
the drizzle would dress you in diamonds and sunlight
and for a couple of hours you would be gorgeous.
For a couple hours I would imagine you being gorgeous.

For a couple of months it was flames brighter and warmer
than we could have ever hoped for,
with sunny days preceding starry nights and a couple of hours
with you that only I am privileged with.
For a couple months the days and nights went on just like that.

A couple of years...
Never happens.
A couple of months wave us through and we got lost in the transit area.
Your heart was damaged on the ride over,
and as much as I didn't want to admit it, I knew it hurt you.
Try as I might, you only get a couple of hours to mend heartbreak
if you've only been a couple, for a couple months.
I didn't have enough pieces,
I didn't have enough time,
and a couple of hours sitting in silence as I see your face turn lonely,
calling out old names you never got over,
and learning to mask the pain long enough for you to remember mine in your dreams.
I wanted only just a couple of hours in your sleep.

I wanted only to be the couple of hours,
that made you happiest.
That in the couple of weeks that were harder than others,
I wanted to be the couple of moments in the day that made it worth it.
I wanted to be that couple with years under their belts to prove that
you can be happy even after being so sad for so long.

For a couple of hours,
I watch the moon spill through my window,
looking for the stars that no longer turn my room into its own starry sky.
I wave it off a couple of days,
not wanting to remember the reason why it had come.
Not wanting to remember anything.
For a couple of hours,
I just want you.

I love the honest way you write emotional romance, how it is integrated with metaphoric beauty without a moments bashful remorse.
