INSOMNIA

INSOMNIA

A Poem by Joseph Mulpeter

INSOMNIA

Night time is always the worst
As the light fades, making way for the darkness to come creeping in, I do not sleep,
Instead i lay, i lay awake in my sleepless state of consciousness.. just thinking
I think about all the craziest things, i think about my future, I think about my past

There's an old clock that ticks in the corner of our living room, i hear the tick-tock from my sleepless bed,
I hear the sleeping snoring, The sounds of the rustling of my pillow as i switch position hoping to fall into that unconscious state that i so badly miss.

My  eyes are shut, telling myself, just control your breathing
I inhale, hold it, ONE.. TWO.. THREE, I exhale, I repeat this continuously
After a while I lose focus, My mind wonders elsewhere until I lose count and have to start over
There's no telling if tonight will be another sleepless night, but its already a minute after four and already i am hearing the life outside begin to wake
I'm fighting a losing battle, I open my eyes and begin to yawn, half in and half out of the sheets i become irritated, Irritated that Insomnia has won again, Insomnia has taken home the trophy five nights in a row.

I move my sheets, and sit up
I'm the only thing stopping me from my desire to sleep, but my mind won't let me
My mind won't give in and rest, my body tells me i should sleep but my mind has other plans.

Tonight has been another sleepless night, As i sit here awake waiting for sunrise
I decide to make the call i've been procrastinating to make for a while, to start cognitive behavioural therapy
Maybe then i can figure out a way of getting a good night sleep, and beat Insomnia once and for all.

I can relate to it little bit as I was a pure night owl but now I have changed my routine and gradually I am turning into a morning bird and taking full night sleep. I think 7-8 hours of continuous night sleep is must and one should not compromise it at any cost. Thank you for this marvellous writeup. I felt like I went back in my past when I used to play with my younger brother at night and he used to cry entering a dark room.

This is one of the most straightforward & realistic descriptions of how insomnia can feel. You include so many small details to remind us of various tricks used & yet of no use. I’ve been an insomniac most of my adult life, so I stopped worrying about it. If I can’t sleep, I just get up & do something. Even tho your poem sounds like most people, the way they complain about not being able to sleep, I also find it kinda silly to put so much energy into trying to sleep! *smile* Fondly, Margie

it can be a horrible feeling at times, and yeah its best to have your mind focused on something else.. read more
Just had a night like that > too hot > remove the single sheet > Now too cold
Glad when it comes light > I can get up and sleep in a chair

When we cannot find sleep. Life become harder. I liked your description. You made the reader feel and understand the words and thoughts. Thank you Joseph for sharing the amazing poetry.
