N***a

N***a

A Poem by J.L. Davenport
"

To the beautiful black community who has to be disparaged by this damn word and everyone else that has to hear this damn word!

"

N***a

N***a

N***a

N***a, huh?

I'm a real n***a

That's what you say...

(silence)

Here is what I say...

Damn straight you's a n***a

Representing inferiority

Continuing the plague of inferiority

Promoting inferiority

Prospering off of demoting your fellow man

Hey n***a, whatchu got in those pants. A whole lot of s**t?

Your a*s is rubbing up against your ankles, dragging your feet n***a

Hmmf, papa didn't fertilize any n****s

Hmmf, mama didn't born no n****s

Hmmf, families didn't raise any n****s

Hmmf, communities didn't look out for any n****s

Where is your culture brother? Do you know from whence you came?

Na you don't know, which is a whole other problem of its own

Just dragging your feet

Living your life uncivilized

Trying to dodge the streets

Dodging the streets don't make you a n***a...n***a

(silence)

We did not march to have no n****s...brother

We did not die to have no free n****s...brother

We did not slave in the fields to have no n****s...son

We weren't chained on dark, molded, sickness, infested ships to have no n****s...son

Beat...n****s

Hanged...n****s

Cut off that n****s big black balls and stuff them in his monkey lips...n***a

Rape that little nappy-headed wench ruin her insides...n***a

Beat that old coon like a man...n***a

Burn that (n***a)...listen to him scream like a b***h...n***a

(silence)

They were no n****s

They were strong and brilliant people whose lives were not so simple

Oh wait...but you is a n***a

Ignorance

Shaming yourself

Shaming your lineage, your generation, your brothers and sisters around you...who share your color, your race, past, present and future

Shaming us all with no sense...n***a

Tell me this, what makes n***a ok?

Do not say it is spelled a different way

Do not say, "Damn!" It doesn't even sound the same."

Do not say, "But, I am a n***a."

That one slanged up pain of a word claimed the dignity of a people once and it is a horrid misinterpretation of a people now

Oh wait, but you is a n***a

Hmmf,

The first n***a, the last n***a, the best n***a, the worse n***a, the realest n***a, the dopest n***a

N***a with no figure

Hmmf,

Yes you's a n***a, you's also the betrayed n***a, the lost n***a, the robbed n***a and I ain't talking about no dope

You's also the shamed n***a, then blamed n***a, hated n***a, incarcerated n***a, mocked n***a, illiterate n***a, rags to riches and back to rags n***a

You's also the laughed at n***a by all them copycat wanting to be n****s and can be n****s if they want to...n***a

So if you like to be all those things n***a... then be a n***a...n***a

Be a N***A alone

Being that I use the word "n***a", I'd have to say that I found this to be on point to a certain extent. Before I get to that, though....I thought as a piece that this was DOPE; not heroin, just plain spit. When reading this piece, I could feel the build-up and you hit on that emotion and I could feel this piece thru you, envisioning me actually watching you say it live, you know?

Today, I think 'n***a' means something else all together, really. Let's be honest....people, while bigots still, have become more educated, and like it or not, pretty much more acclimated to having us around. You see, they call us n****s behind our back because....well....it's the only way they'd feel they had one up on us, you dig? Like....everything you did to destroy us, failed. I know the cop that pulled me over in Missouri and said that he'd been tailing me for six miles, watching my speed, called me a 'n***a'. "No matter what you do boy, you'll still be a n-----." And I say, "How unintelligent and really telling upon their lot in life." I can tell my daughter that ANYTHING is possible; but you still see me as a n***a. So I laugh at the irony....becoming everything they said a n***a couldn't, ie; living past 18, 21, or 25. Educated. Principled. Civilized. If that's a n***a, I'm good.

Great, great joint. Made me really think. Welcome to the Cafe.
