Father Time

Father Time

A Poem by Quill
"

some things are not to be battled with

"

In my years I've have faced my fair share of battles

And I have known no greater enemy than Father Time

This grisly beast can never be conquered

He neither respects nor pity anyone

Ever quietly torturing all without their knowing

His presence is only felt after he has passed

Leaving regret and fear in each wake

Without a care he scars the mind of his victims

Ever keeping them with a daunting past and a non-assured future

His chilling grasp is truly eternal

One's existence is evidently tailored by him

He decides when you come to be and where you cease to exist

He alone decides your pace to prosperity, if it ever comes to be

He cannot be reasoned with, he cannot be bargained with

His purpose is absolute

His verdict cannot appealed

Some try to understand him others try to overcome him

Their attempts shall forever be futile

There is no use feuding with him

Why fight an already lost battle

Those who claim they apprehend him say they have befriended him

I find such claims are made by the ingenious or the insane

I still cannot ascribe a decisive conclusion

My battle with Father Time has always been lopsided

To call it a battle really is refurbishing it

I have never landed an attack, it has been quite a beating

This has led me to new insights

I have been wrong about this creature

As I reflect on his lore I see something contrary

Has this beat down truly been lessons

It would seem Father Time was tutoring me

Now I see the values he propagated

And it is time to effect what Father taught me

The poet here treats an age old problem. Our physical lives are irrevocably limited by time. Whether we realize it or not, it is always on our minds. Every time we check our watches or celebrate New Year's Eve, we are commenting on the irresistible flow upon which our lives are borne. The poet describes a history of resisting time, but at the poem's ending indicates it has taught him something. Another poem telling us what he has learned would be nice.

Yes; only all the time, though. I seem to forget when it's never. I'm workin' on that.
That's all right, though.
I, in turn, am against Time.
It's constantly making me late, it's never long unless I'm waiting, and I'm always being told I'm running out of it.
That old b*****d's been stalkin' me for years. Oh, here he comes--I'm off--thanks for a good read, and have a good time!
