Shot Me Down

Shot Me Down

A Poem by Ryan Z. Dawson
"

Some stream-of-consciousness lyrics. I fear that they come off as forced or disingenuous. Been listening to a lot of The National and Camera Obscura. This is what happens when I try to write prose.

"

Dead to light

The dawn is foundering

Limping through the star-dim sky

In your eyes

The gulf is spreading out

To consume you.  Windows swing on chaos black

Underneath

The skin of offering

Heresy is thinly masked

Old beliefs

Are slowly crumbling

To expose the fragile heart of star-white fear

            I slipped this town

            On a vulture’s wing

            More lost than lonely

            You shot me down

            With a flaming dart

Long ago

And conscience withering

You were twisted black and red

Far below

The fated, tumbling,

You disintegrated, flooding me at last

Dead to light

The dark is swallowing

What I hoped would be the blood of this new day

Love denied

The path I’m following

Stretches into the inferno where you lie

            I slipped this town

            On a vulture’s wing

            More lost than lonely

            You shot me down

            With a flaming dart
