Depths of the Ocean

Depths of the Ocean

A Poem by Curtis

Depths of the Ocean " April 6th 2014

Making a big deal of the past?

Remembering things that shouldn’t last?

Why do we dwell on what's gone by?

We remember the sad things; why?

We write about the hurt and pain

Why do these things still remain?

Maybe we seek understanding?

Maybe we want empathizing?

Are we searching for someone to walk beside?

Someone whom we can reveal to what is inside

Someone who feels what we feel

Someone who will not conceal

One who has experienced this emotion

One who has gone through this commotion

We're trying to keep our heads above the water

But each day the ocean seems to get deeper

We look down as we sink into the abyss

But we remember what’s at the surface and all we’ll miss

So we do our best to stay afloat

And we remember the good things we've wrote

We recall the happiness we once had

And bring back the good, not the bad

We can't live in the depths

We can't live in our regrets

We have to pull ourselves out

We can't live in pain and doubt

And if you find yourself too heavy

If you find you are sinking quickly

Then find someone to grab hold to

But don't bring them down with you

Instead, follow them to safety

Become more than you wanted to be

Give them the love that lies within you

Be honest and true

Build others up regardless of how you're feeling

You’re not the only one who has trouble swimming

And there may be others who have sunken farther

You may even have to swim in deeper

Grab a hold of those who feel they can't reach the surface

Find those who have lost their sense of purpose

Some have nearly reached the bottom

But we can still save them

And yes, it’s frightening down there

You hold your breath and choke for air

You pray you'll make it back to the surface in time

And pray you don't get pulled into the dirt and grime

And maybe you’ve already started sinking down

And each day goes by with a frown

Sometimes it seems the deeper you go the faster you sink

And the pressure is greater than you think

But then you may remember, God sent you down a rope

Something to hold on to so you can cope

Something to tug on when you need to be uplifted

God has always been there, even when the waters have shifted

God is there to help when the current pulls you in

You know it can be hard to swim, but God will help you begin

You've been down there before

You know what's on the ocean floor

Chest pounding, you feel chilled right through

Shivering and wondering whether you’ll be able to continue

The intensity of the moment

Deprived of air, barely surviving the torment

But you begin seeing the light of day

And you know it's going to be okay

You know your almost there

You’re holding on till you reach the air

You feel yourself breaking through the surface

Leaving the depths of that crevice

And looking around, you see others

It seems you have some followers

But there's still some down there sinking to their death

So all of you take just one measly breath

And though you're not sure what will happen

You dive right back in again

Back to where you once came

But this time it’s not the same

Gods has given you a breath of life

And now you cut the water like a knife

This heavy sea is so much easier to swim through

And now you have friends who tread alongside you

And you all have smiles on your faces

Because you know God is there in these scary places

Together you bring others up to the top

And show them that God has a love that does not stop

And they taste the beautiful air

And realize that God has always been there

His love is always being deployed

He's been with us in our void

He's found us in our emptiness

And brought us out of the nothingness

He knows of the grime we've been stuck in

And he forgives us for all our sin

He gives us the support we need to keep swimming here

He conquers the darkness and frees us from our fear
