Monsters Will Destroy Themselves

Monsters Will Destroy Themselves

A Poem by Audrey Owens

Monsters Will Destroy Themselves
Lashing at the hands that love them
Only realizing too late:
It's dying, a love once bright now dim,
The raised scars only catching the glow.
Something took more than it was given,
Something gave more than it had,
And then the stars all died.
I let the Dove go free
But it came back
And again I forgot
We are but humans.
It bothers me to think
That heave will include you and I.
I held your hand once
Back when we were alive.

Author's Note

Audrey Owens
Written originally back in fall 2009. I think I wrote it backwards. Good thing there's no law on which way to read something.
