I met a Hero

I met a Hero

A Poem by Avia
"

Thank you to all the healthcare workers at the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic, our gratitude cannot be expressed in words, all we can say is Thank You.

"
I met a hero today
She had no cape, or mask or utility belt
I could tell she was pretty underneath her face mask
But her eyes were worried and sad and tired

I wish I knew what to say
I wish I could hold her hand, remove the heaviness she felt
I yearned to make her smile, do whatever she would ask
"Stay safe, that's your job" she said "Do your job, so I can do mine."

Health and safety is everywhere in Britain, you can't go, or do anything without the proper safety equipment. Then we come to NHS staff who seemingly can work without this proper safety equipment, in some cases making their own. When this is all over, this country better get back to manufacturing, and not be held to ransom by cheap imports. To all in the care sector doing their best out there, we salute you.

I'm feeling that the musicality is thrown off a bit in that last line by the presence of "she said". I get why it's there, but out of all the words in that line, it's the pair with the least power, so wouldn't necessarily be needed. You can just put a colon at the end of the previous line, and have that last line, continuous. You will still have that breath in the middle, but you would go straight into the second part of the line rather than walk the "she said" before. It would even out the musicality and make a stronger kicker of an ending to this absolute gem of a poem. Loved it! Well done

A harsh reality we live through right now. The heroes wear face masks. Let’s take time to be thankful for their work, eh? A good reminder here. Thank you!

Stay safe,
Sarah
