Payton Speaks

A Poem by Alicia Hirshey
"

A poem on autism.

"

[I can remember the frustration of not being able to talk. I knew what I wanted to say, but I could not get the words out, so I would just scream.” -Temple Grandin]

Vibrant Two year old

Golden curls

Vast distance

Separates the world

Beautiful mother

Pregnant with another

Cries at the scene

Autism has stolen her dreams

Failing to communicate

Staring into space

It’s more than they can handle

Nothing is falling into place.

Two year old girl

In this world

Yet so very far away

Never once had the ability

To communicate

Classified as a difference

But a disorder is what it seems

They are falling apart at the seams

Afraid of failure

Running from what they might find

Lost in a sea of darkness

Nothingness lies in her eyes

Wanting to express her love

But this problem she bares won’t let her.

Vibrant Two year old

Golden curls

Vast distance

Separates the world

Author's Note

Alicia Hirshey
“Every 20 minutes- less time than it will take you to drink your coffee- another child is diagnosed with autism. It’s much more common than people think, with 1 out of every 150 children diagnosed. Learn the early warning signs of autism and if you’re concerned about your child’s development, talk to your doctor. Early intervention could make a big difference in your child’s future.”

Beautiful poem, such a sad topic. I just saw something that said it's now one out of every 110 kids nowadays -- it's such a sad thing, but the worst thing is how people don't accept it.
