The Opponent

Sometimes this Opponent keeps us from living or loving...

There are people

Who have morals.

Thoughts rest

On their laurels.

 

There is honor

In their actions.

They frown

At infractions.

 

YET…

 

There is one.

An opponent strong,

Who strips virtue,

He strives for wrong.

 

He hinders noble life,

Makes good times hard,

Leaves the righteous worn,

Their conscience marred.

 

A weight, so strong!

It has such power.

Even the strongest

Shake and cower. 

 

Why? When such

Decency is done,

Do the bravest bow

To this smoking gun?

 

Noble men’s deeds

Are worthy of more.

Sadly, this opponent,

Cuts to the core.

 

YET…

 

True Heroes have no tarnish!

No need for this load.

Your actions are gallant.

You live by THE code!

 

You’ve righted past wrongs

By the integrity YOU built.

Be PROUD of yourself!

Let go of the GUILT.

I have to admit this is a truly great piece, the way you have shown your idea in a simple and short way is amazing, the power of honesty and integrity is underrated as people follow those who have made past mistakes, really no one should feel the guilt for saying what's right or even standing up for what they believe in. OK Belle this was a well thought out poem you have written and one which has a good amount of meaning in it. This is something that I believe is happening right now with politicians. Most afraid to say the wrong thing and don't want to be confronted for not being P.C. I don't see why people cant have a difference of opinion with out being ridiculed by another. There is nothing wrong with not agreeing with someone just disagree in a respectful way. Who is really right or wrong? Who decides?

Anyway, sorry, see what your piece did haha. it was good and I like how you structured it and also how you placed the repetitive "Yet". Each stanza was well done and again with the rhyme. Well Belle this piece has the depth if that's what you were trying to achieve, very thought provoking indeed.

Oh, Robert, thank you! I have read this piece over and over. I quite like it myself and absolutely have no idea where it came from inside me. It was important for me to write. I feel it is one of the best pieces I have written. It could be applicable too several situations. I sincerely wonder if politicians feel guilt. Maybe the Opponent has taken them over entirely!
