You Smiled at Me

You Smiled at Me

A Poem by Berto

Why did you smile at me today?
Magnificent piercing eyes.
Don't you know how you melt me?

Yesterday you asked me about her.
I said I thought she was probably fine.

And today you smiled at me.

We once were more than smilers,
until our fears devoured our ambitions.
Or until one of us declared us dead.

Now.
We disagree like siblings.
You hug me like I just saved you from a tornado.

What do you want?
Please don't tease my delicate heart.
Don't you remember the collapse I suffered?

Can I let you in? Are you asking?

Perhaps a kiss.
Show me what you can't say.

Wow - this sounds familiar. All too familiar. You capture the insecurity and agony of not knowing so perfectly. Why do they smile at us, the damn unreadable things??

. what a beautiful piece of poetry ... "we were once more than smilers" is an expression i could never forget ... nor could i forget ... "show me what you can't say" ... sometimes, we have to wait patiently for answers ...
