Please

Please

A Poem by Berto

Please.
Forgive my cowardice.

I want to admit it.
To myself and to you.
I want to shout exuberantly.
But I am mute.

I only know a pattern of disappointment.

Trust abandons me.

I tried, in a detour, to allude to my sentiments.

a hopeless attempt to elicit your devotion.
And I offended you.
As all half-hearted efforts rightly must.

But recently, your eyes have changed. Their shape - It's peaceful.
I no longer incite rage within your iris.

If.
you have to tell me.

Please.

I can't chase as you as I should,
nor as you deserve.

My swagger trips upon itself the moment our eyes meet.

I am disheveled.

Humbled.

No one has loved me.

Perhaps no one should.

But I want you to.
