THE PINK ROSE

THE PINK ROSE

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

passion, nature, alone

"
Alone, in springtime, I cultivate my colorful rose garden
prick my finger on a pink rose stem
a slight smudge of bright red blood
trickles to my palm
a blemish, no distress
resembles a red tattoo

I recall as a wee child
I would shriek at the glimpse of blood
time being I kiss the rose
grateful for its sugary fragrance
which edifies my spirit

Our thoughts and beliefs can change with the passing of time. Your lines Betty reminded me how terrified I was as a child of dragonflies. I would scream for my Dad if I could hear them in my bedroom late at night. A boy in my class wisely showed me how to pick one up in my hands. That was a huge ordeal for me, but once done, my fear of them completely went. Your lines brought that memory back. There is much to learn from nature. Thank you fir sharing these lines and where they took me. Keep safe and well.

You're welcome!
I remember pricking my fingers on roses as a child. It was quite dreadful to see the blood flow. As I grew up, I changed my mind about roses. They are more beautiful than hurtful.

Thank Kim, for visiting my page and reviewing my poem; I really appreciate it.
well.. something relatable not exactly but i still remember my college days since one of my class-mates tried to crush one caterpillar that, i don't know from where, just fell down on the classroom floor. I used to scar of it a lot so couldn't pick up but didn't even let him kill it.. i pushed him back and asked him not to kill...

.. he looked at me; smiled & picked that caterpillar; asked me to take it on hand but i didn't.. and he nicely let him free - and fly outside the window. It was all Springtime, i guess.

childhood or adulthood memories are always pretty unique ones to be remembered, and it even strikes us often times even when we are older than how we once used to be.

And wee you would have felt it was so mean to have something so pretty hurt you. It's funny how we acclimatise to it over the years, perhaps being a little more wiser as the years pass and we are made more aware of the world being out to get us.
I seem to recall mini-me lessons learned of "Don't go near the flowers, that's where bees wait to sting you!" Bess must have shrunk because I remember it clearly and it was at least the size of my fist... Which becomes the size of my head aftera drink and retelling
Ahh, youth... I knew her well. 😀

Simply lovely! How interesting it is that our perceptions and sometimes fears change as we become adults. I love roses too and being pricked by one would sting for a bit but like you could look at it as something of a beautiful red tattoo. Thank you for sharing this wonderful poem.

I love how you intermingle the colors of red & pink in your poem, kind of reminiscent of a Valentine scene where one's heart gets pierced by an arrow. I love how you remember & capture one of those throbbing visualizations that stand out for us decades later, painting it as vividly as if it happened yesterday. I love the symbolism that that which made us quesy long ago might well be what turns us on after we've evolved thru a few different renditions of ourselves (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

A life lesson here, illustrated by an everyday incident. Beauty can sometimes be accompanied by pain, thus nothing is either all good nor all bad. Stop and smell the roses; just don't grip them too tightly.

Lovely review John, so appreciate it! Best, Betty
Even the pretty pink roses have a nasty sting
Yes they draw blood to stain your hands
And often the neighbouring pink roses
