Jump the Gun

Jump the Gun

A Poem by Bianca King
"

When you've already planned the wedding before he's even said hello.

"

The pen!

There is an old saying that goes

Don’t count your eggs before they hatch

But my head is far ahead of that

I’ve named them all before I catch

A hen!

A chicken has an easier life

It doesn’t imagine, or so I believe

Because by the time he’s smiled at me

I know what cufflinks he’ll wear on his sleeve

Amen!

The church bells will ring and ring

We’ll be walking down the isle

Friends will laugh at me and gush

I’ll be the only reason that he'll smile

And then!

We’ll celebrate anniversaries in decades

I’ll love him forever and name

Our children the same as our fathers

No girls, I hate when they play games

Oh Gwen!

I guess, she’s his girlfriend I see

In my head, I guess she wasn’t there

Holding his hand, I guess and wow

Does she always need to stroke his hair?

Again!

I assume I’ve done it again

Where I’ve gone too far in my imaginings

Before he even said hello

I knew the cut of our wedding rings

But when!

I get an idea in my mind

The writer takes course and tells

The story I wish would play out in time

Whether torture or death or wedding bells

Take ten!

And let me do this again

Reel my head from where it’s been

“Hello. Nice to meet you? I’m sorry for what I thought.

Oh wait. Things in my head cannot be seen.”
