The Wedding Shirt

The Wedding Shirt

A Poem by BL

Because there may be no tomorrow
This will be our wedding night
And you will wear a wedding shirt
We have had no time for marriage
As the world around has betrayed us

Standing before me in a haze of light
You look perfect in a veil of cotton
It's as if I have been given an angel
So come to our bed of love
Before the war starts again tomorrow

Get love while you can; eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we all may perish...that sort of thing, eh? I'd advise my daughter to hold out and if he returns from battle he'll have won her hand and heart by valor. If not, she can die with her virtue in tact and won't be stuck raising a child on her own. My oldest waited until she was thirty to get married. By that time she had traveled half the globe and enjoyed her youth. But she eventually married a good man and gave me three beautiful grandchildren. He actually called me and asked for her hand which I thought most honorable.

Lovely! I deeply relate to the idea of a spiritual weeding in the absence of or perhaps even superior to some other formal ceremony.

This is really good! I have to admit the end made me laugh:)
Just for the simple fact that it is so unfortunately true for so
many couples, I enjoyed reading this. Thanks for sharing and b-blessed.

B, I loved it. This poem transported me into the imaginary lives of others, two lovers; it forced me think about humanity, the lives of others; blessing I have; no matter what storm of problems may be brewing; It is beautiful; you pulled me in from the beginning with the statement: Because there may be no tomorrow....It's as if I have been given an angel...I took this writing literally...but so many feel the world around has betrayed us. Relatable to everyone. Thank you. Great writing. D:]]

A nice moment of solitude and peace. Happiness in a world that often overwhelms everything else. Even love and loved ones. I wonder how many time throughout history have people had only a moment to share, while other things were pulling them away from each other.

You start off so strong, but I desired more--ended way too fast.
Could you revise it and add some details about the war and what it does to the couple or some details of one night together--cherished forever?
Just my thoughts.....
Those two stanzas are lovely, however alone it falls down because there is no apparent ending of then thinking about what the war is going to do in the future--which is unknown to all.
You created a nice picture with "Standing before me in a haze of light
You look perfect in a veil of cotton
It's as if I have been given an angel
So come to our bed of love making"
Then it fizzed out--maybe that was what you were going for? (because of the unknowns with war)

That could work...
Your poem is very sweet and romantic. The way you expressed how caresses for others become tyranny when there are swords and weapons surrounding the area very beautifully.

Native American influenced by the sound of it, being part Blackfoot this sounds like a passed down story of ancestral history. Very well done, thank you for sharing.
