From His Little Secret

From His Little Secret

A Poem by Bonnie Paige

NOTHING...takes over my imperfections as much as crossing paths with your memory pages.
Time, reminding me I've faded into the distant past.
Having given you to many of my Hail Mary's.

Two years gone quietly by (just like that)...those pictures sent my world into the High Striker ringing the bell's cry!

Me...his little secret.
You...the grand adventurer that always held the upper hand.
Me...your only fool, filling up years of your lonely traveling hours.
To encounter us on our long journeys created from the effortless, would've taken endeavor, would've taken disruption, would've taken effort in your apathetic world.
My closeness was just too far away.

From memories of your lonely nights of inebriations I recall the promise that never came. "I'm going to bring you here."
She smiles in my place, her dreams coming true. Her love was closer, her place in your heart...effortlessly.

Me...once traveling long distances on your lonely flights keeping you from the sounds of silence.
Me...making you smile, making you giggle, lifting you away from the sounds of silence till you faded into peaceful slumber.
She...traveling with the grand adventurer was closer at hand.

AND...when all is said, when all is done, will she know why? Will she know when? Will she have your respect that only closure can bring?

Bonnie, this carries the sting of resentment. But, I find something much deeper, too. This was a love she wanted. She believed him. It seems she wanted not only him but his journey and path, a fair chance to walk with him in the light, not as a "little secret."

This poem reminds us what often begins as a secret either ends as the same or ends in some tragic, dramatic fashion. It appears one was hurt and the pain lingers. Conversely, he seemed to enjoy the benefits of her love, without making himself vulnerable to her, which is the essence of intimacy. And, it's never a one-sided thing, if real.

This is why I enjoy free verse poetry so much. It has a natural flow, interrupted by forced rhymes. This is an authentic work I say is very good poem.

Thank you for reading one of my longer free verse poems.
It's a lesson learned that you wish you could prevent someone else from learning but we all must travel our own path and grow from our own lessons.
This was an over 30 year lesson from youthful love to adult drama to becoming the secret without closure.
I don't expect everyone to like my work but I thank the heavens I'm able to disappear in poetry.
