Heart Cake

Heart Cake

A Poem by Dave
"

I wrote this for a friend of mine who had reached out to someone to tell them that they liked them, only to be rejected. I hope this helped them get through it just a bit.

"
I ran out of cake today
I gave the final piece away
Now I simply cannot stay
And watch you not accept it

Both my parents were the best
They baked my heart and all the rest
With love, but the final test
Was to give that cake away

A taste here, a big slice there
And now my cake pan is quite bare
And nobody seems to care
About the hole in my chest

Nobody gave me a thing
To replace my large offering
Or to help my suffering
From something quite so unfair

But I don’t care, not one bit
See, my heart cake was not perfect
For it was not a carrot
Cake with lots of sweet icing!

Author's Note

Dave
While I cannot find the name for this style of poem, it is AAAC-BBBA-CCCA with a meter of 7-8-7-7. I was going to use 7-7-7-7, but I found that the extra syllable in the second verse seemed to make it easier to read aloud.
