Sun like Fire

Sun like Fire

A Poem by Hayllie
"

Her heart is in flames as her men walk away to battle, ghostly as they return only to find more loss than before.

"
The setting sun burns like fire
casting brilliant red light
cascading through the kingdom

Fear ripples through me for the first time
This is one war I have dreaded
A war that is certainly to cause mass losses

I stand strong and proud
smiling and granting honor to my men
The soldiers bound by duty
Vowed to protect us all
If they fail it will not be on them

If they fail, I will fail
My kingdom will fall
I trust in my men, Their bravery unmatched

On my balcony my kingdom below
Oblivious to my fears and thoughts
As the world rests on my shoulder's
I know

This is one fight we are surely to loose
God give them strength in the battle
Protect my men
Protect the commanding soldier
For when he returns he will be rewarded

The gift of my heart
no longer to be a soldier
but a leader, my King

May the battle be swift and end in victory
Until the sun like fire
rises again, my heart hangs ghostly
As the moon with a silver shinning

For tomorrow we will be together again

This poem reminded me of King Arthur and The Knights of the Round Table and how battles were fought and won. Often a Knight would wear the colours of his lady as he rode off to fight the enemy. A visually rich piece and a most enjoyable read. Wonderful imagery. Thank you for sharing Hayllie.

This was quite wonderful in the imagining. I can see the battlements, the knights errant perhaps visiting the kingdom and sallying forth into combat with their noble comrades. The defending soldiers and the attacking enemy, the swords, the spears and lances when combat was noble and fought mano y mano. The piece took me back to the tales of King Arthur and the writings of Howard Pyle which I absolutely adored as a young boy. Kings, knights, fair ladies watching the combat from the balcony ready to bestow a kiss of honor upon the brow of some noble warrior fighting for the just and righteous cause. There's always room for a Galahad, a Lancelot or a Sir Gawain when in rides Arthur with Excalibur freshly retrieved from The Lady of the Lake to conquer his enemies and restore peace to the kingdom. I enjoyed the entirety of the write and the trip down medieval memory lane. Carry on, noble poetess, carry on!

I find myself bristling that you use the word "men" more than once to describe troops. Your writing feels so independent & outspoken, but then I'm a little blown away that you don't even mention the women going into battle. Frankly, I think this idea of combat is sorely outdated. This isn't how wars happen anymore. We are in constant battle everywhere, not just on some distant battlefield. I believe our first responders are just as much the front-line warriors in all these wars, as anyone in the military. I feel your poem is written in a fine & polished way, but it just sounds so archaic to me, given our hostilities & battles in so many arenas these days. Sometimes I think poems like this romanticize war & battle, but I have never felt this way about fighting. To glorify the fight is just someone power-tripping so he can send people to go fight his grievances (and here I use "he" becuz it's almost always men sending our men & women into harm's way!) Sorry for going off on this poem. It's well-written, just not my cup of tea, as far as the message (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I liked the above lines. Soldiers wish. To be home and be safe. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.

I agree dear Hayllie. Combat soldiers can fight forever war in their head. You are welcome my friend.. read more
This got to me...reminded me of the draft back in the sixties, and our war in Vietnam where so many who survived physically to come back home...were emotionally and mentally so beaten, they were never the same.
