Simply Raw

Simply Raw

A Poem by Grace Gammello
"

Society's demands can crush, you know.

"

There's this obsession of control, and it's overflowed to our image.

Yes, I know, we rely on our sight, but in our blindness we've let it take charge.

Wow, you're pretty Grace.

Wow, you're accomplished.

Wow, you are everything you should be.

I'm glad they like the filters. To an extent, it's artistic;

It's fun.

Yet it chokes me.

I become what I create myself to be, and it is not genuine.

So who are you, Grace?

Who are you?

I am raw. I am the sweat and dirt of society.

I'm a fighter. I don't swallow conformity, I slay it.

I am raspy. My inarticulate words do not impress.

The alter ego says "queen",

But the truth says "warrior".

And I like the way I am. Why do I hide?

For I am driven. I will hunt down change.

I am beautiful. My hazel eyes shine without a camera lens.

I am real. I have dreams and a heartbeat.

Isn't that enough? Can I be the warrior instead?

I do not need to be what they want. I can be me.
