The Golden Rule

The Golden Rule

A Poem by Captivating Ink

Forever is a long time

To love someone.

Which is why

It is one of the most broken promises

Ever known to man,

And  ‘I love you’

Is the worst lie

Of our kind.

How dare you force that

Onto an innocent being.

Because even though it can heal many a person,

Speaking those three fragile words

Can also reverse

And kill,

In a flick of a tongue,

With the murmur of goodbye.

One quickly discovers that human love often has little to do with happily-ever-after, and far more to do with for-as-long-as-it-lasts.
In other words, our love--unlike God's--is decidedly conditional.
The closest we humans come to unconditional love is that which many parents feel toward their own children.
In any event, this is a stunning poem which rightfully laments the apparently fleeting nature of modern love--and the knowing or unknowing smooth-talkers who glibly misuse those "three little words," with sometimes devastating results.

I don't want to quote your whole poem back to you, all I can say is wow, again. Your poem stirred me up to thinking what I have often thought before. My parents were married almost 60 years when my father passed away. They had a dedicated, and profoundly enduring love, yet even with that he had to leave. This is perhaps, not exactly what you meant, but it is what I think of in addition to other ways of interpretation. I am truly enjoying your work. It speaks to me.
