L'Étoile de Mer

L'Étoile de Mer

A Poem by Casey Truax

I remember the marvels of airplanes,
The oceans of the clouds
And the frostwork blooming on the cabin window.
My fingers touched Stonehenge
And the Mother and Child sculpture
In St. Paul's Cathedral.
I remember the billboard that greeted us
When we left the train station,
Bare-backed Laetitia selling swimsuits
For the Galeries Lafayette.
I remember Paris and the smell of sulfur in the air
And the mascarons of the Musée Marmottan
And how that girl smiled as she rode
Her bicycle through the Trianons,
And how the gardens of Giverny were flushed with light.
I remember the sunset on the highways of France
As the girls on the bus
Sang songs of their own creation.
I remember Montmartre
And piles of garbage due to a strike.
I kicked an empty water bottle down the street
As the moon rose over the Sacré-C"ur
And a child cried, "la lune!"

I love your trip , reminds me of 3 wonderful days in the romantic city of Paris

I love how in this poem you talk about large, important things like Paris, but also small moments of connection like seeing people smile. It really expresses the beauty in life and how both big things (like the moon) and small things (like a child smiling in moonlight) are wonderful. Altogether, this is really wonderful. I love it.

Thank you for reviewing. :)
I remember Paris too, so long ago my first visit. I like your memories here, especially the gardens of Giverny. I have Monet prints of water lilies in my dining room. The light is spectacular. I also visited Sacre Coeur and lit candles for my grandparents. Thank you for sharing this lovely poem with its fine imagery. I love Paris in the spring time. Ella Fitzgerald sang that one. What a great voice she had.

There is nowhere quite like Paris, is there? I will have to listen to that song.
Those are vivid memories. Nicely described.
