Cold

Cold

A Poem by Carolann Dowsett

It's so cold
yet I can hear
the sound of the waves
and they soothe my soul

Loneliness consumes me
yet there are no tears
I don't allow myself
to cry anymore

I am a child of the light
yet darkness surrounds me
Suffocates me
in its heartless embrace

I long to be free
yet my desire traps me
Holds me captive
in a world of unfulfilled dreams
and pointless longings

When I am no more
my name will be nothing
but a forgotten memory
on the lips of a few
who dared to care

The world will turn
until the day of its demise
Just as my flesh will age
until the day I die

Until I am but a speck
in the eye of creation
A collection of atoms
and molecules
flying through time and space
To a destination
that is known by God alone

I want to fly away now
but gravity viciously
holds me down
Refuses to release me
to set me free

So here I remain
trapped by despair
Crying on the inside
Invisible tears
Playing tag with the stars
while I wait out the years

Reminds me of sea walls I've sat upon at 2 and 3 and 4 AM, and how chill is the sea breeze heavy with the ocean's dampness. And you watch the waves rush ashore endlessly, clouds scudding on the starlit horizon, moon's glow on lucky days - shimmering in the troughs... and it's sooo empty and loud enough my head fills with ...hurt...

I understand...

Carolann, this is so very well written. So many lines stuck as I flowed through your wonderful poem today.

"I want to fly away now
but gravity viciously
holds me down"

"Playing tag with the stars
while I wait out the years"

These two in particular are wonderful and very creative. Now that is not to say the others aren't, but these really stuck out to me. Very nicely penned my friend.

Everyone wants to be free. The fact that we cant fly means we aint free.we are locked up in this world fraught with evilness.
Touching poem Carolan.

You are welcome...:)..................
You know when I imagine you writing one of your poems, I always see you on the shores of a beach for some reason, with a white dress. I see you as part of nature, not necessarily inspired by it but a part of it's beauty.. you create the beauty. So I as a reader, be it the feeling when my lost soul needs to cry under the stars as the shadows of a lonely life consume me.. I can hear the echo of your poetic voice telling me i'm not alone, this feeling isn't only mine to hold. Somehow even though your poems have a sad undertone, it keeps a lonely guy like me feeling not so alone.

I like how you juxtaposed a child of light with darkness surrounding, set the tone for this piece, it sure does feel that way sometimes. It's full of pathos yet feels hopeful, there's still a light that shines through. Never stop 'playing tag with the stars', you're it. ;-) Muchly enjoyed.

You can't play tag with the stars and not remain hopeful...my pleasure Carolann ;-)
This piece is quite saddening. It is most ideal that we must have the freedom to do our passion or what gives us fulfillment sometimes there are circumstances that could prevent us from doing it. And when we surrender to accept things as it is, we sometimes end up cold. The unpretentious words, the rawness of emotion is heartbreaking.

I love that you recognize who you are, in spite of the darkness trying to hide you. It starts with believing in ourselves and who we are. We can win when we know our own hearts and our value in life. Thanks for sharing this heartfelt piece.
