Best things in life aren't material

Best things in life aren't material

A Story by Catlen

Remember the stone bridge separating our little worlds?

Underneath it, we were superheroes;

warriors defending their strong fortress.

Look the other way now;

we've just become astronauts.

There we stand on it, gazing at a cloudless sky,

reaching for the stars.

Us, little ones, carefree,

scarred knees, oozing blood

clothes covered in dust,

tangled-haired.

Nothing mattered, remember?

Remember the dry river?

Dry, you say? No, those were no pebbles.

Those were the most colourful fish I had ever seen.

But then again it may not have been a river, at all.

Sometimes, it was a bumpy ride for our brakefree bikes.

Sometimes, it was a rough football field.

Remember those marble steps?

Were they really just steps?

Could they have been a steep mountain, leading us to a giant's castle?

- Remember?

- I do!

- Do you see them now?

- Nothing is there but a road full of cars now.

- No, it's still there if you look closely. You'll see us, too, running around as always till our legs could not hold anymore.

This made me smile, following along with you, seeing through young eyes. I played beneath a bridge, too, and wrote my name on the concrete. Seeing that same bridge now, I want to climb down and see if my writing is still there, these 50+ years later. You, as I, hold onto a bit of childhood, and that is a wonderful thing.
