Trains and Mermaids

Trains and Mermaids

A Poem by Danny boi 24
"

Train ride in the June gloom. Daydreaming of a love interest.

"
Coasting on up the shoreline, pausing every few miles.
I see the fondness of two lovers.
I see pure innocence as two sisters share a drink of water.
Cars crowd the shoulder of the adjacent highway. The surfers are on call.
The opaque sky melts into the dusty waters.
We are half a world apart but I know you are out there.
Somewhere, hidden in that grey blue mist.
The thought of you makes my heart race.
Your picture picks me up and slams me into the surf.
Short of breath and a heartbeat from drowning, I reach the surface.
I can feel the riptide.
The trick is not to fight it.
I know how to escape.
I know I can make it back to the tracks but I let it have me anyway.
The water is all that holds our worlds together.
I am back under but this time I am calm.
I can't help but stare.
You have no idea but you're staring back at me. You're smile is soft and all else delightful.
You have unthinkable beauty.
The kind that is born in the dreams of sailors. "A real life mermaid" I think to myself.
Only slightly conscious, I hear my turn to disembark.
The seas calm and as they reside you chase them towards the foggy edge of the earth.
I fight like hell but I can't keep up. After all, I am no merman.
I get up. I get out. I mosey my way back to reality.
I see lovers holding hands.
I see sisters sharing water.
And I envy them.
This world is so dry.
Arid and suffocating without you here.
Your smile, your eyes, are my ocean.
