Angel of Selene

Angel of Selene

A Poem by Fabian G. Franklin
"

The Luna Moth

"

Silent night: soft moonlight

Dances round the floor

Elfin shadows hide and seek

The morning's secret door

Adrift in arms of Morpheus

I take my summer's nap

But deep within my dream there comes

The slightest muffled tap

Again, again, I hear the sound

Water falling into pools

Submerged below, I nearly drown

On that secret ship of fools

Startled now, I rouse from sleep

To find what witchcraft seems

To lure my soul into the deep

And drown me in my dreams

A tapping at my window

Before the dawn’s first light

Morbid fear within me grows

Of unknown creatures in the night

Out the crack of curtain peer

Suspicious, seeking eyes

Curious, finding nothing there

But crescent moon and sky

‘Are Fairies tripping through the dew?’

Perhaps I only dreamt it

Then the sound begins anew

By terror, courage tempted

Made bold by fear I grasp the lace

And tear the curtain down

Prepared to meet an intruder's face

But not for what I found

A glorious Angel of Selene

Draped in fairest jade

A moon embroidered on each wing;

Luna's servant here displayed

Fairest of the night's bright creatures

I am so ashamed

That my mortal form lay sleeping

When you tapped upon my pane

Weary, I did not entreat you

into my humble room

Nor did I rise to greet you,

Angel of the crescent moon

Here she flutters swallowtail

And spreads her wings in flight

Returning to the shadow's veil;

Into the arms of darkest night

I strain my eyes into the black

To glimpse her fleeting wing

Then rise to put the curtain back

And dream of her till morning

Just gorgeous from start to finish; absolutely my kind of poetry, and would not look amiss in a book of classical poetry penned many a year ago; and there was just the right touch of the mystery of the night as an accompaniment to your beautiful description of that little visitor.

Beccy.

For a while, what with the tapping, I thought this might be a Poe trip. But instead of a mournful blackbird, an angel appeared. Nicely rhymed, very well paced.

Thanks. The tapping was the moth trying to escape. It had somehow got between the screen and the win.. read more
we have those ... they cling to our screens every year .. huge and so beautiful!
bravo says i ... wonderful lilting read for me ... couldn't find a better tribute to such a magical creature ... love the elves and myths brought in ...and this verse especially:
"Startled now, I rouse from sleep
To find what witchcraft seems
To lure my soul into the deep
And drown me in my dreams"
I wake up at and before the witching hour most nights ... i suppose that's why that verse appeals to me so. ... such a treat to see these moths in the wild .. big time shame to miss out for going back to sleep ;) well done ... fine experience in reading for me!

So glad you enjoyed my poetic offering...I was trying to put a sort of E.A. Poe, Raven, feel to an e.. read more
except for the tapping on the window panes...i thought of tapping on the flap...this reminds me of the good old days of boy scouts and camping in the woods...
those wonderful and eerie sounds of the night that we heard from within the tent.
beautiful poem....so serene.
