Roll Back The Time

Roll Back The Time

A Poem by Cherrie Palmer
"

Kisses and Cookies (my superpower_

"

From the top of the hill,

I see you come.

My smile is weary.

For you are on the run.

Running from life,

Hiding from pain.

Looking for pigtails

and your old windowpane.

The road to mamma’s has not a toll.

And there’s no place like it

so I have been told.

I head to the kitchen

for cookies and plates.

Two of everything on the table is placed.

Silence is broken

with the closing of the door.

That familiar aroma

Let’s her,

 let out a moan.

“Momma”

She cries.

“I’m home.”

As my grown girl,

rushes to hug my neck.

Her fears are bottled,

corked down tight,

but with a kiss to the cheek,

one tear, swings wide the tide.

Kisses and cookies

cannot fix everything.

But, a journey

to momma’s

can renew ones hopes

and

roll back the time

as she swings on the old knotted rope.

Leaving home is like having elastic band syndrome.
You need it to stretch so far before it snaps right back to safety.
I think that's why we leave stuff in the old house just, so we can pop back in emergencies.

Your palpable poem makes this often-lost option feel viable again! There's always some aspect of life that brings this level of comforting & letting go, even when the cookies & the baker can no longer be part of our scene. I love how your poem pops on the literal level, taking your reader back in time, but also it's an invitation to search & find the plate of cookies (still accessible) that we may be overlooking (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Reaffirming and nostalgic.
Most of us never wanted to believe Tom Wolfe; we yearn to go home, again.
Wonderful, Cherrie!

Yes, some of my favorite memories happened in my momma's and or my grandma's kitchen.
Nicely written poem. I like the ride the rhymes took me on as well as the detailed words and meaning of the well-put title. tyfs

:) thank you, Cy. I hope all is well with you.
Beautifully described the emotions. The last stanza has the best universal feel portrayed.

A nicely set scene, described well and set full of the emotions of that moment. I guess this does play out as children return to the safety of home when the going gets tough.
