Listen Not To The Pain

a poem by Chris T.

“I have a need, a serious need.

It scratches at me daily leaving its scar

Focus is shifted and attention is amassed unto distraction

This is the thorn that I walk with every moment.”

“Does any one see, can any one hear?

When will it be my turn to be complete?

Why won’t someone stop to help?”

Distraction turns to fulltime obsession.

“This journey is so long; my battle-scarred life.

The mountain is too high; breeding in my heart jealously and strife.

Come unto me Lord and take from me this life-changer; this peace-eroder.

Why, oh why, don’t you answer my prayer; do you hear me Lord?”

Obsession boils over to resentment and sin begins to take its hold.

Those were the words I used to say everyday,

‘Til the Lord waited patiently for my resolve to steady and stay.

For unknown to me a war was being waged,

Then a battle rose up and began to be staged.

You see, while I was distracted with pain and deep need

Satan and his helpers upon my heart they did feed.

Out of distraction I became less aware

That something consumed all of my prayer

And my worldly focus became a multitude of one

For out of control my life had just spun

Then waiting on God became a laundry list of wants

Because I listened and entertained the enemy’s taunts,

And I placed upon myself a burden and yoke.

Forgetting about others and all friendly folk.

So, heed my sincere warning; don’t listen to pain.

Take the focus off of yourself; refrain, refrain,

From being consumed by only your wants

And turn a deaf ear to the enemy’s whispers and taunts

Philippians 2:3-8 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider
others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the
interests of others.Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient
to death–even death on a cross!”

This poem is a warning to not be obsessed with your healing to the point of making you the only focus in your life. We need to serve others. There is joy in doing so and God richly blesses those who serve. I know there is pain, and that it really can hurt, but don’t lash out at others and squander your life; living in a way that is totally self-centered and confused. The enemy want’s you to focus on the pain. Satan want’s you to stop talking to your neighbor about Christ. He loves it when God’s children are too wrapped up in themselves; making them ineffective. Many of you know that I suffer from a multitude of serious health conditions, and , I can tell you from experience, I used to live a self-centered life. I would bark prayer request at god. I would bark orders at my family and just live a dismal existence. I have overcome this. I wanted to write this poem to tell others about the traps the devil can lay for those who are in daily pain. It leads to a stunted relationship with God, and, ultimately, spiritually death as well. So, please re-read the scripture about and read about our model and hope, Jesus. His servant’s heart, even unto death, is something we all should aspire to and live out every day. Today, be a blessing to some one and forget your struggle for a while. You will find it liberating and good. God promises to take care of you(Matthew 6:25-26). He has for me, and He will for you as well. Don’t let pain consume you and walk in servitude.
