When You Sojourn A While

a Poem by Chris T.

When the times are tough, rough, hard and hostile,

Then it might be time to sojourn a while.

If the grinding of my teeth won’t masticate my favorite food

Then the only warning might conclude,

That you’ve been trying it your way for far, far too long.

And, after I strum my favorite chord and no joy sails from my heart,

I will begin to find that my stress is now off the chart.

For I try and try, work and play, give no quarter and chip and chip away,

Now it creeps, it crawls, finds no rhythm and eats up all my day.

Once was a mission has now become decay.

My muscles, my intellect and every ounce of my might,

Is collected in order, of my design and my self-imposed plight.

Confusion, remorse, weariness and surprise,

Has led to my detour but not my demise.

The cloudy eyes have cleared and an epiphany has begun.

I realize it’s time to pull off of the road,

And listen to that voice that lightens my load,

To stop clicking off all those miles and miles

For now it is time to sojourn a while.

Author's Note

This is poem written about a warning from the Lord to stop doing all those things in my own power. He always wants me to stop, listen and rest in His abundant provision. Not a lot of explanation needed here. The poem speaks for its self.
Here is a great verse for you strivers out there who are need to be patient enough to wait for the Lord’s plan to unfold. Psalm 62:5 “Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.”

Such Eloquence, such amazing vocabulary, and full of experience.
Only a seasoned poet can provide a piece such as this. You must avoid malapropism though.

Sometimes its just a voice as clear as day that tells us to back or stop what we are doing or how we're feeling about something. Almost a universal message regarding the path we need to follow in our lifetime. Nicely done, inspirational write.

Nice poem and advice. Sometimes we have to just let go and follow the signs we are giving. Great work. Thanks for sharing it.

A wise message in this poem. We need to stop and listen to the voice of reason and calm. Easy to fall on the wrong road and lose control. Hard to stop and ask for help. Thank you for the outstanding poem.

A great reminder for us all, to give up the illusion of control. Penned beautifully. Thankyou.

Beautifully penned poem with an amazing rhyme scheme and a flow that may sound haunting. This defines perfectly about how important it is to just stop and relax for awhile. Proceeding on and on with progress is not always the best way to go, sometimes, it's best to stop and imagine, find some peace.
One thing, the second line of the second stanza, I think that the "in" there is supposed to be an "is". That's if I'm reading it correctly.
Wonderful start and a perfect ending, great job!
