Recurring Face

Recurring Face

A Poem by Mason Rayburn

Silhouette
Well-known to me
Face is clouded
By shadows of time
Do I know her?
Of course not
Separated by a wall
Isolation
Fear installed
Refusing comfort of company
Thrown aside in some back alley
Left alone but not to die
A wound of the heart
Is hardly lethal
More of a bite
That keeps on itching
More like a cut
Without any stitching
Refusing help but needing something
Another new face just keeps it coming
Each new life brings more baggage
Heavy totes leaving me ravaged
Another weight upon my shoulders
Another ember left to smolder
Holding on is all I know
Just need sleep
Away we go
For a time, I will be cleansed
But the face returns
It makes no sense
My mind moves on
But my heart is stalled
An endless pit
An endless fall
Just go away
Free my mind
Thought is gone
Gears don't grind
Not even dreams
Disturb my rest
But freedom never
Manifests
