“Wilma”

I assume that you want to know the story. The story of which Wilma Crawford is…or was. My name is Donny Birks, but my friends just call me Don. I first met Wilma when I was in my late twenties…twenty-eight I believe. That was around the year 1965. It was a better time. Much better than now.

Back then I had a life worth living. I wasn’t the washed up lonely old b*****d I am now. That was the only time in my life I experienced true happiness…and it was all because of Wilma. At that time, my Dad was dying of lung cancer. We went up to visit him everyday, but he just seemed to grow worse and worse. However, Wilma’s appearance in my life was a blessing.

It was a warm and sunny day in July. It was the time of day when I was at my dad’s house and I was completely devastated. It was the day that the doctor completely gave up. He told us the typical bullshit the doctor always says. That there was “nothing else we can do”. Bullshit right? Maybe not. But there was something she could do. Wilma.

I was sitting in the living room on Dad’s couch when I heard a knock at the door. I got off of the couch and wiped the tears off of my face. I walked over to the door and opened it. Standing at my doorstep was a young woman. I know this may sound strange, but she had magic like quality to her. He skin was perfect. Many teenage girls will kill to have it. It was glowing. She had the softest white hair, but not white white, but a type of pearl or eggshell color. Her skin was a beautiful dark tan color and she was wearing the biggest smile I had ever seen on her face with pearly white teeth that nearly burned out my retunes.

She was wearing a long white dress that reached down to the ground and was quite thin. A soon as I saw her I knew that she was special.

“Hi Mr. Birks! Are you the one with the ill father?” She asked me. I know what you are thinking. How did she know my name? And how did she know about my father? But that wasn’t even on my mind. I don’t know why, but all I could think about was that she made the pain and grief I felt for my father go away. When I was with her, I felt no sadness or pain. I don’t know why, but I felt bliss.

“Ye…Yes!” I studded. I moved a side and she came in. Even the she walked was mystical. It was as if she didn’t even walk at all, but she just glided across the floor. I shut the door behind me and turned back around. Wilma was over by the staircase. She began walking up the stairs and I followed. It’s hard to believe, but I didn’t even question. I just followed her in awe.

When she reached the top of the stairs, without even asking, she walked straight into Dad’s room without hesitation. When I got in there she was standing at Dad’s bedside. He was sleeping. She began stroking his forehead. His opened his eyes and surprisingly was calm. He had no expression of fear what so ever.

“Shhh.” She said to him rubbing his head. Wilma closed her eyes and held her right and still on his moist head. Her hand began to glow with a white colored glow. My eyes began to water with amazement. She took her hand off of his head and he sat up in bed. There was something instantly different about him. He no longer had his pasty white completion. It looked as if he was given new life…and that was exactly it. She turned around to face me and walked out of the bedroom. Dad got out of the bed with a strange amount of energy and the two of us followed her out. Wilma walked down the stairs and we followed in awe. She reached the door and turned around to face us again.

“Who are you?” I asked her. She smiled at me and touched my hand.

“My name is Wilma.” She said proudly. She then turned around and walked out the door. We never saw her again.

Now, years later, my dad has past. She gave me a few more years with him. I guess that’s all I can really ask for. I’m lonely bitter old man who’s just trying to find happiness at the bottom of a glass bottle. So who was Wilma Crawford? I don’t know. Hell, I don’t even know what she was. The only thing I know for sure is that she was a miracle.

This may not be one of your best but it does come pretty darn close. More than that ... it points to what a horror writer keeps in his chest ... and the times at which he brings them into the open. Quite wonderful to read and a pleasure to store as memory. A great story for the season. Nice. Your father ought to be proud.

actually I like the deviation from the darker stuff - I think there may be more story than you wrote here judging from the last paragraph...perhaps an expansion if you decide to rewrite this one.

Yes, it's a good story, and not too many mistakes either. But it left the reader missing something.
