Why did you have to go?

Why did you have to go?

A Poem by Dylan Burch
"

Just a poem about a friend I lost... For a contest.

"
I remember like it was just yesterday,
You passed on, so young
Why did you go?
Why did he have to take you?

It seemed like just that morning,
I held you in my arms,
and you responded by purring lovingly,
Oh why did you have to go?

I sat you down for just a moment,
Heading inside for a drink of water,
I then returned outside,
Unaware of what was next,

I watched you come back from across the street,
I smiled to myself before a large object neared.
It entered my peripheral vision, heading forward,
My face changed, and my legs sprung into action,

The large white vehicle didn't stop,
Bringing the black veil of death along with it,
I was petrified as I fell to my knees,
Why did he have to take you?

I cried tears for you,
I shed curse words for you,
But all hope was absent,
You, my kitten, were gone.

Gone,
Gone forever more,
Living only in my heart and mind,
Why did you have to go?

However, even after you left this world,
You live on in me,
I still shed tears thinking of you,
Thinking of my loss,

I sometimes think of you,
And I will still ask aloud,
Why did you have to leave me?
Why did he have to steal you from me?

Why, my sweet Sandy, did you have to go?

"The large white vehicle didn't stop,
Bringing the black veil of death along with it,"

'veil of death' has been made unwelcome by the repetition of the image. The use of the multiple adjectives (large, white, black) ascends these two lines into schmaltzy melodrama.

Overall, it is debatable where the death of a cat demands such a heart-rending eulogy.
