doggie don't know

doggie don't know

A Poem by Daniel Atkinson

lady left on valentine's day with the flowers
but the doggie don't know.

baby boy with a broken home
but the doggie don't know.

dad with a spinning head
dizzy with the drink and screaming to god
boat offshore in choppy waters
rudders chopping the squid to calamari
rocking and making the sailors sick.

oh, the rum isn't helping but sometimes it does
with the world crooked you can see straight
sea on a tilt and the waves pumping
captain salt-mad and roaring drunk
he's just trying to see home again.

money ain't coming
but the doggie don't know.

door slams open and dad's tired again
angry at nothing and trying not to let it show
baby cries and dad screams
just wants to sleep, but don't they both?
they'll meet as equals in twenty years' time
baby as far from death as dad is close
the trees in the orchard line up and you can see forever.

time's coming
but the doggie don't know.

doggie sits and whines
ears perked and listening to
f**k
and
god why.

dad wants to die
but the doggie don't know
doggie don't know.
