ain't never

ain't never

A Poem by Daniel Atkinson
"

an attempt to make amends.

"
drivin' with the windows down
on one of those stormy nights,
i'm balancin' the root beer on my lap,
tryin' to keep it
from droppin' its load.

hell, i'm about to drop my load.
guess you remember the fight.
you wanted to slap me, you said.
wanted to hit me hard.
good lord, darlin'!
that hurt me bad--
bad enough to make me
drive off in the rain
and take a personal exodus.

didn't do much...
drove some.
parked some.
cried some.
decided i'm gonna be a better man.
guess that's something i shoulda
figured out for myself
before you lost your faith in me.

guess that's why i'm so hard to love.

i hear i make you feel like the tin man,
like i'm stealin' your heart
right outta your rusty chest.
i'll tell you one thing, darlin'.
you listen hard:
i ain't never gonna take your heart
in a malicious fist
and squeeze.
ain't never gonna
twist things,
make you bleed inside.

ain't never gonna leave you bruised.

the way i hear it,
lovers dance to a different tune.

well done. we always hurt the ones we love...it's good you're able to apologize, that's a skill too many don't have.
