US Women

US Women

A Poem by Colette
"

as women we face similar challenges worldwide, but we are stronger than the hands that attempt to oppress us

"

We sit with our many layers by the fireplace.

Speak of our liberation, which

will float in on the tide of the Gulf of Mexico,

like the many seashells who came before us.

We no longer feel immortal,

but something is biting us

nibbling our ear, speaking to our souls

telling us “It’s your time.”

This does not mean a time for death.

It is our time to live,

as we have visualized in meditation.

As we know we should to be in a true state of Zen.

Eyelashes, paintings,

children to escort, cats to walk,

shoes, Blues to drive away.

Our past will follow us.

The abuse by our fathers, incest, assault,

victims of violent crimes and verbal knives

cutting us decade after decade.

We own our past.  We take it with us

to learn, grow, and shape our future.

US women, strong, compassionate

determined for change.

We’ll shed our layers, our dead skin,

like those of the sea shed their shells.

We’ll bask in the sun over the sand of a new beginning.

We are pearls.  US women

tossed around, sometimes by abrasive hands.

Like stones in a rock polisher we shine.

We’ve had a long journey through turbulent waters

but we will arrive.  We will land on a golden shore.

We will empower those who follow

as those who have preceded enlighten us.

US women

We have a story to tell...

A life still to live.

Colette-
I am touched.
You are a strong, beautiful and inspiring woman...with so much to say.
You are an artist, a poet and a true friend.
I love you.
