On Narcissism

On Narcissism

A Poem by Colin Kingsden

When I long for the voices of others
I shall not sag into self-obsession,
or treat their words as tokens of any fashion,
collected one by one - each day -
to satisfy my needy way.

I shall not say I am a poet,
or live in any state self-professed -
this is to say, egotistically obsessed;
longing for validation - or even worse yet,
stumbling to my own vindication.

I shan’t - shall not - cannot -
and then I realize that these are all silly terms
suggesting a conscious resistance of sorts.
It is more fitting to say
that I have no need.

This is a captivating piece that shows a life-long struggle of humans concerning pride and vanity. I haven't seen it written about in quite so elegant a way, though. Bravo on yet another brilliant piece. Yet another 100/100 on my rating.
