The Mask

The Mask

The Mask
A Poem by Colton Warr

Tell me, if you could,
What can you hide behind your mask?
What treacherous thoughts, what eroding emotion.
I will answer, but only because you ask

I'll tell you, because I can
A divided family, a questionable love
A decision made to leave a perfect girl
An innocent mirage that I cannot get out of

I'll tell you, because I can
New beginnings and abrupt endings
A phantom haunting my heart and soul
My god, where am I heading?

I'll tell you, because I can
Am I the one doing the marooning, or am I being marooned?
Pushing and pulling at my own pleasure
Can't you taste my wound?

I'll tell you, because I can
I love my family, I hate my true love
Or perhaps did I confuse the two?
Can't you tell, I am such the wholesome Dove?

I'll tell you, because I can
Have I gone too far, should I be caged alone?
I deserve to be by myself
Forever destined to aimlessly roam

I'll tell you, because I can
What damnation awaits me, you politely ask
But perhaps it is you that should decide
Am I the one wearing a Mask?

This really gets into my head -
"What can you hide behind your mask?"

A question well put, and one needed to be asked.

Wow I really enjoyed this poem. I loved the words you used and really made me think about people wearing masks. I think we all wear masks at time and it would be nice to not hide behind them to be ourselves.

Beautifully written. Really got me thinking with its depth and truth; the heart of it all. I wish our true selves, our souls were showed more often. It seems a rarity these days...

This is a great glimpse into who we are behind the mask we have created for ourselves. The mask that we have decided is what the world will want from us. Who we think we should be, rather than who we really are.

And yet, holding that mask up to our faces everyday causes all of the underlying tension that we feel snaking around our souls that you capture so well in this poem

This poem carries a great truth, we all have our mask. We life live like we no it all but the most of us have not even found their true self yet. It is suppressed by their surroundings and themselves, for they are afraid of their true self whom they carry deep within. If one suppresses themselves, one is not being is his/her true self and one forms a mental mask which hides their true faces. Our masks differ from person to person but it is easy to create a mask but to destroy it is the hard part. Sometimes one has the feeling that he/she is not even being his or herself anymore. The mask is too deeply rooted in the soul of its vessel. The mask resides in both our soul and body but the form of the mask can be reshaped by pure willpower, so one can be his/her true self.

This poem was a another powerful masterpiece, for it lacked no talent, metaphor or emotions.

Good job :D

No problem
Nicely done. The emotions are clear, the reading is smooth. This poem makes me feel lonely. I like the repetition of the phrase 'I'll tell you because I can.' You ryhmed every second and last line well. My only concern is the use of 'of' at the end of the second stanza. It breaks the flow. Lovely write.

I'll tell you because I can, got caught up in this one. It seems as if you've requested me to read some of your other stories and somehow everything about this one drew me to it more so than your others. Very talented. Keep writing.
