The Curl Of My Hair

The Curl Of My Hair

A Poem by D Connolly
"

What we dislike about ourselves might be beautiful to someone else

"

I struggled with my hair before work

Weighing the idea of snipping that bit by my ear

That curl has a mind of it's own

Daily its ugliness torments me!

Deciding to live with the disgrace

I turned my head at the coffee maker

So as not to offend the innocent bystander

        Turning to me she says

"Did you do something to your hair?"

I had accepted the curl; now became self conscious

"I think I brushed it differently this morning"

Her warm eyes smiled as she said

"I love that little curl by your ear, its so cute."

Author's Note

D Connolly
Maybe once in a while we get down on ourselves for the silliest things (I know I do), maybe we don't "fit in" or look just like we wished. But our little quirks are what distinguishes us in other people's eyes.

D Connolly,
Thank you for sharing another honest look at a window of the every day process. Within we process as well. What are we feeling? Why do we feel that way. Our hair is like a covering, a presentation of who we are. It is natural to want to be our best. I loved how this curl was a metaphor for something which needed attention and is the catalyst for a fine message. Accept who we are as we try to accept others.
cool writing!

I agree and absolutely love the message you conveyed in this piece! It's funny sometimes how we have to see our beauty through someone else's eyes to realize it.

thankyou YumnaKay, I appreciate you
Oh to have that curl of hair
to replace that that isn't there,
Once I thought to begin
To fatten my hair...it's much too thin,
But now, it's no use to complain,
all my curls went down the drain.

Good write Dani

I have fought the strong curl in my hair most of my life. What I dislike, others love. Hairdressers tell me how lucky I am and yet....... I relate so much here to your words. We should howevet learn to accept ourselves, give ourselves a break. If it's not hair, you can bet it's something else :)

My advice to you is to never change the way you brush your hair. I like that you find poetry in the simple everyday aspects of life. Very much so enjoyed this.

Thank-you Mr. L, I enjoy your poetry as well :)
I find it brilliant the way you selected one particular curl to be a metaphor for all the things we look at critically about ourselves. This is a great message & amazing how you packed so much into such a short piece. I always enjoy the way your writing is very down-to-earth & straightforward, just like real life! (((HUGS)))

This makes a good sense Dani. Under the subtle cover of a curl you expressed a good deal of psychological dependency we get into. Its an easy to read personality related write.
