A Blade of Grass

A Blade of Grass

A Poem by Dani California

A blade of grass rests comfortably;

resting on my knee, small and green,

I stare at it suspiciously.

A blade of grass sits quietly;

sitting on my knee, small and green,

I wonder what it wants from me.

A blade of grass weeps silently;

weeping on my knee, small and green,

I brush it away thoughtlessly.

A blade of grass carries no shame;

staring back at me, strong and green,

never forgetting its moment of fame.

The simple silent things in life are often overlooked yet so important. This poem celebrates their place in this world. This brings to mind a small fern that grows from a pocket on a boulder in my favorite bouldering area. I have been visiting this place for 18 yrs and the fern never grows any bigger but lives on.I have always made a point of greeting him, to appreciate the small things that make the whole so beautiful. Thank you for reminding me . I loved this poem . Great job.

i can understand the idea behind it , but i think it goes a little deeper
i have come to realize that alot of the things we write reflect the writer
a single blade of grass, it by itself is nothing , but when united with the rest of the yard or field
it is huge. It is a part of somthing that keeps growing back. Something that can't be stopped, a single blade of grass, small and weak but strong in the sense that it can never be killed . Just cut down ,. but in time it will grow back...

Interesting piece! It always seems when we are the ones studying something, we feel as if that something is really studying us! Cleaver poem!

This is intriguing Dani. What's WIP? lol. I'm serious. I don't know...

I guess it takes all of us to make this World unique; I feel that's at least part of what you're saying? Each and every blade of grass, as insignificant as it seems, is needed to create a beautiful green landscape which leaves us breathless and captivated.

You have structured a perfect canvas of artistry in imagery, analogy and personification as I both feel and see the tears of that small blade of grass:

A blade of grass weeps silently;
weeping on my knee, small and green,
I brush it away thoughtlessly.

This particular stanza really forced me to stop and think... I know sometimes we tend to take things for granted, things that we don't feel are important at the time, at least. Sometimes the most wonderful things,
assuming that they'll always be there.

The final stanza evokes a feeling of melancholy and mystery. I want to hug that little blade of grass for seeing its self-worth and cherishing proudly that moment of fame. You have really established empathy in the mind of the reader.

Awe, Dani... simply beautiful my friend :-) Just beautiful.

D, this is nice. Again, you have taken the mundane and turned it into something infamous :) But then again, nature is just as alive as you and me; even a blade of grass. I also like the color of the text which gives the poem more depth and meaning. Yeah, I can definitely learn from you. You have a way of bringing light and magic to things.

A blade of glass, something taken for granted yet it has it has it's place and deserve it acknowledgement.
Well done Dani.

'Still pondering the green theme; 'still reading it in two different ways. Maybe you're saying that nature goes on "naturally" regardless of how one feels and thinks.
Thought provoking, to say the least

Well now, knowing you, I know there is a lot more to this poem than first meets the eye.

Green with envy? Green with hope?

Very good indeed. Everyone and everything has its time no matter how brief. If only we could speak the language of the natural world beyond our own.
