Subliminal Scars

Subliminal Scars

A Poem by DannyLynne Riley

In moments of madness

she would plead

"if you cut me I might bleed"

still he could trace

with fingertips placed

against the grooves

on her doubtful face

waking the monsters

from under her bed

the words declared

but left unsaid

"why must you

feed

the need

to bleed

from all those subliminal scars?"

exposing the evidence

she hid in dark jars

sharp tools and blades

to christen her pain

to conjure and claim

and give it a name

because sometimes there are wounds

that still have yet to scar

the pain is still so fresh and raw

but then there are scars

so completely marooned

they never got the chance

to be a wound

those subliminal scars

like the marks on her arms

are the alarming manifestation

of pain unfreed

and therein lies

the insatiable need

to claim the hurt

from which she bleeds
