I Chose Life

I Chose Life

A Story by DannyLynne Riley

…..because one day you wake up

and you begin to discard your death self

you begin to give away those rotting pieces of yourself.

You sell them for quarters to the homeless lady with the death cart.

You sell them for just a small piece of hope

and in the beginning

you do not get as much as you have thrown away

still... you do this anyway

you buy some time

to fill your spaces with life

for you know in your heart

that the empty spaces that now console you

are better than all the fullness of death.

It is the last crucial step.

You begin to accept

this new you with the lonely spaces...

a far cry from that exciting girl

adorned with death and all of its dramatic poses.

you know they once called you the Life of the party ...

"Dear God" what a strange thing to say?

and why would you call it that anyway?

for everything in that party reeked of death

there wasn't any life in it at all.

And you cant say for sure exactly when it happens

but a morning comes

where you rise with the sun

and you know

in your soul

that your new life has just begun.

and like a baby bird

I would emerge

from the throngs of hell

and grips of death and night

and reach for the light

for with the breaking of dawn and shell

it seems after all I would live to tell

a story rooted in struggle and strife

Even still...I chose life
