Serious Poetics

Serious Poetics

A Chapter by Dave Brown
"

getting real

"

When I try serious poems

It just doesn’t work

I seem to be missing some

Serious type quirk

Although I sometimes wonder

If it’s a real necessary kinda perk

But all great poets write seriously

And a great poet

Is what I wanna be

So I really must apply myself

More vigorously

And hopefully my poetic’s won’t be regarded

As more unnecessary debris

A night school course

Called me away

From my lack of serious

Day after day

But when I found out how much

I’d have to pay

My pursuit of serious

Vanished quickly away

Poets like you & me are doomed, my friend, becuz none of these hoity-toities will accept rhyming poets into their club. They look down upon rhyming like we're still in diapers. And as if our bad rhyming habits weren't disqualifying enuf, me 'n' you think about as deeply as a grizzly swatting salmon in the middle of the stream. Beyond those dire poetic impurities, we're also contaminated with overactive funny bones. And there you have it . . . please don't try to escape me by leaving amateur-land! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Dave, I'd say keep writing poems like this one because it's who you are. I'd not say you don't write serious poems. I think you have layers. One of my favorite American poets is Billy Collins, who has been criticized for his "under-conceptualized" poetry. His poetry is quite the opposite. I think humor and lightheartedness can draw in readers who want that and those who want to look underneath and between the lines. I always enjoy your work, and this one is no exception.

We all write , or try to, what we think we do best Dave, and if light hearted is your " bag" then so be it.
Hope you are well

My question is why so serious ? My friend you got it gift of great humour and creativity . At same way like Lewis Carrol or Jonathan Swift . You are able to make smiles on faces of serious poet like a me. In the way your writing here is very unique and refreshing. So keep your writing how is it.

I think Correspondence course is great idea. I was also thinking maybe created group where all members of this website can share with own experience with creative writing.

Your poems will never be unnecessary debris Dave. Sometimes I think my stuff is too serious, I would like to bring in more lighthearted topics. I enjoy all you write. I know when I visit you I'm going to come away uplifted and smiling.

I'm not exactly sure what "serious" even means in terms of writing. I'm sure Dr. Suess took his royalty checks pretty damned seriously and I've no doubt that most people who read Rod McKuen think he's pretty serious. Who knows. I recently read a novel about a sentient fungus and loved it. Your writing, serious or not, is always enjoyed by this rarely serious reader. Nice work.
